Is CBD Safe for Dogs?

For most dogs, a quality, THC-free CBD oil is safe and well tolerated. The safety record is large, the side effects are usually mild, and the strongest evidence is for supporting comfort and mobility. The two real cautions are drug interactions (check with your vet) and avoiding any product with THC, which is toxic to dogs. It is a supplement, not a cure, and it takes a couple of weeks of consistent use to judge.

Is CBD safe for dogs?

The safety record is reassuring. The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) has logged hundreds of millions of CBD administrations in pets, with adverse events reported in a tiny fraction of a percent – and the ones that occur are mild, most often a temporary upset stomach or soft stool. Interestingly, those effects are often traced not to the CBD itself but to the carrier oil (MCT) or terpenes in the product.

One hard rule: THC is toxic to dogs. Choose a product with no detectable THC, which means broad-spectrum, third-party tested, with a certificate of analysis.

What the largest safety study found

For years, vets wanted a big, rigorous study before recommending CBD. We now have one. The Waltham Petcare Science Institute ran a randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded study giving healthy dogs a daily oral dose of broad-spectrum, THC-free CBD over six months, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. They found it well tolerated, with no clinically meaningful harm across bloodwork, urine, and organ measures. The one notable change was a transient rise in a liver enzyme (ALP) that returned to normal after the study – thought to reflect the liver processing the CBD, not liver damage. That brings us to the most important practical caution.

Side effects and drug interactions

At sensible doses, side effects are uncommon and mild:

• Soft stool or mild stomach upset (often from the carrier oil, not the CBD)
• Drowsiness (a sign the dose may be too high)
• Changes in appetite

The bigger consideration is drug interactions. CBD affects the same liver enzymes (cytochrome P450) that process many medications, so it can change how another drug behaves. If your dog is on any medication – especially seizure medication, or anything with a narrow safety window – talk to your veterinarian before adding CBD.

Does CBD work for dogs? What the research shows

Honestly: the evidence is strongest for joint comfort and mobility. Studies, including work at Cornell, found that most dogs with arthritis were more comfortable and active on CBD. There is promising early research for supporting calm in anxious dogs, and ongoing work in other areas. CBD is best understood as a supplement that may support normal comfort and calm – not a treatment for any disease. Give it time: it can take two to three weeks of consistent twice-daily use before you notice a change, and the change is often gradual.

How will I know if it is working?

The best approach is to track behavior. Before you start, note (or video) the things your dog struggles with, then look for change over two to three weeks of twice-daily use. Ask yourself:

• Does your dog get up from lying down more easily?
• Does your dog seem less stiff, or move more fluidly?
• Does your dog seem calmer and more content?
• Can your dog manage the stairs or jump again?
• Does your dog seem more energetic, or more playful and interactive?
• Does your dog recover more quickly after exercise?

If you can answer yes to some of these – and CBD is the only thing you changed – it is a good sign the product is working.

How much CBD should I give my dog?

Dose by weight, twice a day, and start low. Our guidance, in line with the research, is a loading dose of about 2 mg/kg twice daily for the first week, then easing to about 1 mg/kg twice daily. How to choose a safe product

• NASC-certified brands follow quality and labeling standards.
• A current certificate of analysis (COA) confirming CBD content and no detectable THC.
• Broad spectrum / THC-free, clearly stated, with a clear milligram strength.
• No medical claims. There are no FDA-approved CBD products for pets, so a site promising to cure or treat disease is a red flag. Buy from a reputable brand that does not make medical claims.
