Three decades devoted to the animal brain and spine, board-certified in both neurology and surgery. He wrote Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology, the reference taught from in veterinary schools and residency programs, and leads a canine cognitive dysfunction research program that runs from MRI to the gut-brain axis. He formulated CogniCaps and medically reviews the dog dementia guides in this library.

About Dr. Dewey
Curtis Dewey earned his DVM at Cornell University in 1989, then trained at the University of Georgia through an internship, a small animal surgery residency, and an MS in Anatomy before completing a neurology and neurosurgery residency at the University of California, Davis. In 1996 he became a Diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Neurology and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, a dual certification few veterinarians hold. He joined the Texas A&M faculty that same year, then spent five years as staff neurologist at Long Island Veterinary Specialists.
From 2006 to 2020 he was Associate Professor at Cornell, where he led the Neurology and Neurosurgery service as Section Chief. His textbook, Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology, is the reference veterinary schools and neurology residencies teach from, now in its third edition and translated into multiple languages. He also wrote the neurosurgery chapters in the 4th and 5th editions of Small Animal Surgery, the textbook by our founder, Dr. Terry Fossum.
His work then took an integrative turn: certifications in veterinary acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, food therapy, Tui-na, and canine rehabilitation, and in 2019 his own practice, Elemental Pet Vets in Freeville, New York. He teaches as a part-time Professor at Chi University, and his research program on canine cognitive dysfunction spans MRI biomarkers, nutrition, transcranial photobiomodulation, and the gut-brain axis. At Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care he formulated CogniCaps and reviews every guide in the dog dementia library for medical accuracy.
