About Dr. Miller

Matthew Miller trained at The Ohio State University, earning his DVM in 1984 and returning for a cardiology residency after an internship in Los Angeles. Board-certified in 1988, he joined the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine the same year and stayed for 26 years, rising to full professor with tenure. His clinical research helped define familial ventricular arrhythmias in Boxers and dilated cardiomyopathy in Great Danes, put feline heartworm disease on the map, and produced one of the largest studies ever published on patent ductus arteriosus, the most common congenital heart defect in dogs.

His work reached beyond veterinary patients. As a Charter Fellow of the Michael E. DeBakey Institute and director of the Texas A&M Institute for Preclinical Studies, the translational institute founded by Dr. Terry Fossum, he helped move cardiovascular devices from ventricular assist systems to vascular implants toward human use. He also served the profession’s fight against heartworm disease for years, including chairing the American Heartworm Society’s Triennial Symposium.

In 2014 he returned to full-time clinical practice in Arizona, where he now leads Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists North Scottsdale as medical director and staff cardiologist. At Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care he helped formulate CardioChew and reviews every guide in the dog heart health library for medical accuracy.
