Natural Anti-Itch Breakthrough for Dogs: Dr. Terry Fossum Explains the Science Behind Oleander

  • 1 hour of RACE-approved CE
  • Watch on demand, start any time
  • Free, no account needed
  • Medical category

Terry W. Fossum, DVM, PhD, DACVS presents the oleander research she has led in dogs: a purified, very-low-dose extract of Nerium oleander (also listed as Nerium indicum). The lecture covers the pharmacology of the extract and its principal active compound, oleandrin; the dose range and safety data from the canine studies; the proposed mechanism; and the design and findings of the studies in dogs with atopic dermatitis, including how the extract was compared with current prescription options such as oclacitinib (Apoquel) and lokivetmab (Cytopoint).

This course is an educational review for veterinary professionals. Oleander is toxic at ordinary doses; the work discussed concerns a purified extract at microgram-per-kilogram doses that is still under study. Nothing in this course is a treatment recommendation.

What you will take away

  • Describe the pharmacology and toxicity profile of Nerium oleander extract and its active compound
  • Summarize the dosing and safety data from the canine studies
  • Explain the proposed mechanism of the low-dose extract
  • Describe the design, findings and limitations of the canine atopic dermatitis studies
  • Place this research alongside the current prescription options for canine pruritus

Program agenda

  • Background: Nerium oleander in medicine, and why a very-low-dose extract was studied in dogs
  • Safety and dosing: the dose range studied in dogs (4 to 5 micrograms per kilogram) and the safety data collected
  • Mechanism: the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory pathways proposed for the extract
  • Atopic dermatitis studies: design, endpoints and findings, and how the extract was compared with oclacitinib (Apoquel) and lokivetmab (Cytopoint)
  • Other research directions discussed in the lecture
  • Future directions: open questions and the studies still needed
